Launched to breathless anticipation for 2020, Chevrolet’s eighth-generation Corvette Stingray rewrote history as the first mid-engine Corvette ever produced – a long-held goal of Zora Arkus-Duntov, the original chief Corvette engineer. Before introduction, Chevrolet’s Corvette engineers tantalized the motoring press with some bold promises, including acceleration and road-holding, despite a higher-than-expected weight. In contrast to the 755-horsepower 2019 Corvette ZR1 of the prior generation, the entry-level 495-horsepower Corvette tested by Motor Trend magazine accelerated quicker from 0 to 60 MPH and nearly matched the prior ZR1 over the quarter mile, thanks to the new car’s 61% rear weight bias and new launch control. Roadholding and braking of the new Corvette are awesome to match.
